Police have crippled an online gambling syndicate with stakes amounting to RM3.36 million a month following the arrest of five men at an apartment in Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim said the syndicate, believed to have been active since a year ago, had 20,000 registered players.
He said the suspects, all Malaysians and in their 20s, were arrested at about 3.45 pm last Friday.
“The syndicate promotes their service through the WhatApps and WeChat applications and also the short service messaging system by using GSM SMS Blasting Machine.
“They received stakes of about RM120,000 daily, with all transaction using local and foreign accounts,” he told a media conference here today.
He said the police were now looking for the leader of the syndicate.
During the raid, he said, police also seized 14 sets of computers, 40 SIM cards, a GSM SMS Blasting Machine, 42 handphones and five laptops.
All the suspects are in remand until tomorrow to facilitate police investigation under Section 4(1) (c) of the Betting Act 1953.
In another development, Mazlan said the police had called up eight people for investigation in connection with a 19-year-old man who received 15 stitches on the head when hit by a bicycle tyre, believed thrown from a higher floor of a flats housing at Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Gombak Setia Blok 41 here last Friday.
