PAS, Youth wings stage protest against Icerd

About 1,500 people converged at Masjid Jamek in Kuala Lumpur today to protest against Malaysia's commitment to ratify the UN International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
Co-organised by Umno Youth and PAS Youth, the protest started at 1pm and the protesters will march to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman where PAS Youth chief Khalil Abdul Hadi is expected to deliver a speech in front of the Sogo shopping mall.
Both chiefs of the Youth wings, Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (Umno) and Khalil, as well as several Malay-Muslim NGO leaders, were present at Masjid Jamek.
The protesters, mostly clad in white shirts as a symbol of protest, were heard chanting tolak Icerd (reject Icerd), while NGO leaders took turns to deliver speeches criticising the government's plan to ratify Icerd.
On Oct 24, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waythamoorthy was reported to have said that the government was committed to ratifying Icerd and five other treaties on human rights as early as the first quarter of next year.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said the government would only ratify Icerd after negotiations with all the races.
This had created an uproar among several groups, including Umno Youth, who believed that Icerd contradicted the Federal Constitution in terms of bumiputera special rights and would sideline the Council of Rulers.
