MACC hauls up PKR man over phantom voters issue

EXCLUSIVE | MACC has arrested a PKR man in charge of its membership over alleged registration of phantom voters.
The commission's deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the arrest, saying that it was part of its probe into a report concerning the party's ongoing election.
Sources told Malaysiakini that the 31-year-old man was detained about 7pm on Friday by investigators who were probing alleged irregularities in PKR membership, where a surge of new members was registered ahead of its electoral process.
"The man is the head of PKR membership unit.
"He was picked up by MACC investigators over suspicion of registering phantom voters for its election.
"From information gathered, the activity was allegedly carried out by one of PKR factions which are contesting in the party election," said a source.
Sources also said that MACC was looking into alleged buying of votes that happened in several states, including in Sabah, Kedah and Perak.
"More arrests might follow," said a source.
Azam, when contacted for confirmation, however, declined to reveal further, citing ongoing investigation.
When asked if the commission was also investigating PKR's election committee which was responsible for the party's first-time online voting process, Azam did not rule out that possibility.
"If there's a lead (that calls for the committee's assistance in MACC probe), we might call them in too," he said.
It was reported that MACC had on Thursday paid a visit to PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, where the investigators confiscated several documents before calling one of its employees for questioning yesterday. - Mkini
