Umno supreme council to discuss Zahid's presidency

The Umno supreme council will discuss the status of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as party president when it meets on Friday.
On the agenda would also be the party's Youth wing’s proposal that the president go on leave pending the resolution of Zahid's criminal charges, according to news portal The Malaysian Insight(TMI).
Zahid is currently facing 45 counts of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and receiving gratification amounting to over RM114 million in relation to welfare foundation Yayasan Akal Budi and other projects while he was home minister.
According to the TMI report, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki will raise the proposal at Friday's meeting.
The portal quoted an unnamed supreme council member who said: “People want to see the role that the Youth can play leading Umno. Whether the wing will be a ‘yes-man’ and whether it will speak up if our leaders make mistakes".
Asyraf had on Oct 25 called on Zahid to go on leave as the latter would be facing trial over the criminal charges laid upon him earlier last month.
The Youth chief had stated that the matter was decided upon during the wing's exco meeting.
"We urge him to consider taking leave from the president's post until his cases have been disposed of by the court," Asyraf (photo) had said at the time.
Even Zahid's number two, deputy president Mohamad Hasan pointed out that Umno standard operating procedure (SOP) stipulated that high-ranking leaders go on leave when faced with criminal charges in court.
Mohamad, however, added that the leader could resume his or her position if he or she were later found to be not guilty.
Zahid, however, did not take kindly to the proposal. When asked by a reporter if he would entertain this proposal, Zahid retorted: "What right do you have to ask this question?" - Mkini
