Logging, recreational activities in K’tan on hold for two months

The Kelantan state government has halted logging activities in the state for two months to avert any untoward occurrences during monsoon season, effective from Nov 15.
This was in response to Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail who called on Kelantan and Terengganu to emulate the move by Pahang to suspend logging activities in the state.
Kelantan Forestry Department director Zahari Ibrahim said the circular will be issued to the loggers in the state.
The new instruction by the state government also restricts tourism activities in the state’s recreational forest, he said.
"It is an annual practice that logging activities be temporarily halted during the monsoon season," he said.
"All recreational areas such as Gunung Stong in Kuala Krai will be closed to the public," he said.
"We do not want injuries or loss of life due to lightning strikes and landslides during this period," he said when contacted.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah as saying it was a standard practice by the state to ban logging activities during the monsoon season. - Mkini
